It’s a well-known fact that sports fans will buy just about anything related to their favourite teams and players. This notion will be put to the test once again when fans of the New York Yankees will be able to buy dirt that shortstop Derek Jeter has walked on. This of course isn’t just any old dirt. It will be collected from the infields of the ball parks that the retiring Yankees’ skipper has played on.

The marketing scheme was thought up by Steiner Sports, which is the official collectibles firm of the famous baseball club. Steiner Sports will be selling plaques which feature a capsule filled with dirt from the infield of Yankee Stadium. Again, this isn’t just any old dirt though since it supposedly comes from some of the legendary player’s most famous and historical games.

The plaques will be sold at $19.99 and $29.99. The pricier items will be for the more important Jeter milestones. These include events such as his 3,000th hit, first home run, and even his farewell speech which took place at the original Yankee Stadium. In addition, fans can pay $69.99 for some infield dirt from the recent MLB All Star game at Target Field in Minnesota. Jeter hit a double in his first at bat in the contest and helped the American League beat the National League 5-3 for home-field advantage in the 2014 World Series.

Steiner Sports is also offering a free capsule of dirt to fans who register on the company’s website. This dirt is supposedly from this season, which of course is the 40-year-old Jeter’s 20th and last in the big leagues. The firm is selling a plaque for $349 which lists all of the ballparks Jeter played in and how many hits he had in each of them up until his 3,000th hit. The CEO of Steiner Sports, Brandon Steiner, said the sales are going very well because fans don’t like Jeter, they love him, and the plaques make ideal gifts for baseball fans.

And while we’re on the topic of sports memorabilia that’s up for sale, the old desk from ESPN’s SportsCenter show was recently put up for auction along with part of the studio set. The items were listed on the television network’s 10th annual internet auction with the profits going to the V Foundation for Cancer Research.
