When the United States beat Canada a few days ago — in Canada nonetheless! — it subsequently revived our belief in miracles. Okay, well not really. But, what it did do is allow us to see firsthand how far USA hockey has come since their 1980 mega upset of our Cold War villains. You see, when those guys won the gold, it was because they were scrappy, and possessed a tremendous amount of heart. When the USA beat Canada, it was, and rightfully so, because the USA had more skill.
Now that there has been some time to digest, and gloat in victory, the inevitable question is raised: Could the USA do it again? Could they beat Canada in a rematch, but this time for gold? It’s a plausible occurrence.
With the USA’s recent 2-0 victory over Switzerland — uh, no surprise; they’re neutral, I think — they advance to the semi-finals to play the winner of Czech Republic-Finland. Canada just romped the Russians 7-3 in a game which was obviously a statement game. In case you missed it, that statement was “we’re not gonna go down like a hoser, eh”. Their victory sets them up for a semi-final berth against the Sweden-Slovakia winner on Friday.
But back to the question: Could the USA beat Canada once again, for the gold, in Canada? Sure, why not? To do so though, they’ll need goalie Ryan Miller to repeat the game of his life. He masterfully stood in goal, denying flurry after flurry of Canada’s shots; 42 saves in all. It’s unfathomable to think of how many blocks were needed in the late minutes of that game. If Miller isn’t on, Canada at least ties.
Then, there’s the disparity in shots on goal between the two squads. Canada shot 45 times, the USA just 22. Nine times out of 10, that’s going Canada’s way. USA’s stars are going to have to become more offensive in a rematch, because honestly: no way USA wins again under these same circumstances. Patrick Kane, specifically, needs to step it up. He shot one time in the victory.
Finally, don’t discount those loud-ass fucking canucks. The people of Celine Dion and Will Arnett will be jumpy. They’ll be disorderly. They’ll be discontent with anything other than Canadian gold and their home-ice advantage could be huge the second time around.
You like hockey, right? What say you, kind sirs? US-Canada rematch. Who you got?
