English Premier League club Everton announced they will be bringing Slovakian World Cup goalkeeper Jan Mucha to Merseyside now that his contract with Legia Warsaw in Poland came to an end on July 1st.

The 27-year-old Mucha started all four of Slovakia’s games during the recent World Cup and has a total of 19 caps for his country. The club said Mucha signed an agreement with them back in January and will hook up with them after a short holiday.

Mucha was with Legia Warsaw since 2005 after joining the club from MSK Zilina of Slovakia. He took over the number one role with the Polish side after Legia sold Polish international keeper Lukasz Fabianski to Arsenal in 2007. Mucha played 95 games with Legia Warsaw and in 2008 lifted the Polish Cup.

Chris Woods, Everton’s goalkeeping coach, stated that Mucha won’t be coming over just to sit on the bench and watch the club’s current keeper, American international Tim Howard play. Woods said he expects Mucha to challenge Howard for the top job and that’s the main reason they want him.

The 30-year-old Howard has 55 caps for the USA and has been Everton’s first choice keeper since joining the team in 2006-07, when Manchester United loaned him out.

Veteran reserve keeper Carlo Nash will probably be let go by Everton as it’s expected the out-of-contract 36-year-old will sign with Stoke City soon to backup Danish World Cup keeper Thomas Sorensen.

Everton also announced 23-year-old John Ruddy has been sold to Norwich City. The English keeper was loaned out to Scottish Premier League club Motherwell last season and made 34 starts for them while letting in 47 goals.  Everton still has former Scottish under-21 keeper Iain Turner in the squad, but he’s only played in three games for the club in the last seven years.
