There was a heavy slate of games in the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign on Sept. 3rd.

England kicked off its campaign the same way it did the World Cup qualifiers, with a pretty impressive victory, this one 4-0 at home over Bulgaria. Jermain Defoe led the way with a hat trick and Adam Johnson chipped in with the other.

Over in Paris, Laurent Blanc’s first game as France manager was a disaster as they were beaten 1-0 by Belarus thanks to a goal in the 86th minute. The French Football Federation’s decision to ban a few players seems to have backfired on them as they’re now worse than ever.

Portugal also dropped points as they were held to a 4-4 draw at home in a wild shootout. Both teams held the lead twice as the game featured end to end action. Portugal was without Cristiano Ronaldo through injury as well as manager Carlos Queiroz who’s suspended.

World Cup and reigning European champions Spain hammered Liechtenstein 4-0. Fernando Torres scored two, with David Villa and David Silva adding singles.

Italy had to fight back from a goal down to beat Estonia 2-1 in Estonia. It was Italy’s first win in 2010.

Germany won 1-0 on the road in Belgium through a goal by Miroslav Klose in the 51st minute.

Holland beat San Marion 5-0 with a hat trick from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, a penalty by Dirk Kuyt and a 90th minute marker from Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Russia beat Andorra 2-0 with striker Pavel Pogrebnyak scoring both goals, one of them a penalty.

Ireland beat Armenia on the road with a goal by substitute Keith Fahey in the 76th minute.

Northern Ireland beat Slovenia 1-0 on the road with a goal by Manchester United midfielder Corry Evans in the 70th minute.

Slovakia beat Macedonia 1-0 at home after Filip Holosko scored the winner in the last minute.

Turkey beat Kazakhstan 3-0 in Almaty, with Guus Hiddink in charge as manager for the Turks.

Serbia took an away win 3-0 in the Faroe Islands and Norway scored twice in the second half for a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Iceland with the winner coming in the 75th minute.
Scotland fought to a 0-0 draw in Lithuania, but couldn’t score despite their territorial edge in play.

Montenegro scored a 1-0 home win over Wales and Bosnia-Herzegovina scored three goals in the first 15 minutes to beat Luxembourg 3-0.

Romania and Albania fought to a 1-1 home draw with Albania. Romania went ahead in the 80th minute and Albania tied it up in the 88th.

Croatia scored a 3-0 win over Latvia 3-0 on the road and Greece drew 1-1 at home to Georgia.

Sweden earned a 2-0 win at home over Hungary while Moldova beat Finland 2-0 at home after Finland’s’ Sami Hyypia was sent off with two goals in the last 20 minutes.

Most teams play again on Tues. Sept 7th.
