Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier extended his hitting streak to 28 games with a fifth inning RBI infield single as the Dodgers defeated the Chicago Cubs 5-2 in the opener of a three-game series at Dodger Stadium. Ethier is now just three games shy of the Dodgers franchise record, and exactly halfway to equaling Joe DiMaggio’s Major League record of 56 games.
Ethier, though, is saying its way too early to be thinking of knocking off DiMaggio:
Only halfway? It’s nothing to get too caught up in or excited about right now. There’s still a long way to go. I’m more happy about [Clayton] Kershaw getting back on track and us bouncing back after two tough losses to San Diego. … It’s neat to be a part of this and keep it going, but I’m not going up there every at-bat just to extend the streak. I want to get my knocks and do my damage offensively. I mean, if the streak wasn’t going on, I’d be just as [pissed] if I got out no matter what the situation was.
The infield single was Ethier’s only base hit in the game, but it gave the Dodgers a 5-1 lead shortly after rookie Jerry Sands broke the game open with a two-run double.
That was more than enough run support for Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw, who scattered eight hits over seven innings and improved to 3-3.
