Adam Johnson, who most recently played with Sunderland in the English Premier League until he was sacked earlier this year, has been sentenced to six years in prison for having sex with a15-year-old female fan. He was handed the sentence on March 24 at Bradford Crown Court after being found guilty of the offence which took place in his car last year in County Durham. The 28-year-old previously pleaded guilty to the charges of grooming a child and sexual activity with a child.

The winger was dropped by Sunderland in February after pleading guilty to those charges. However, Johnson also pleaded not guilty to a pair of charges of sexual activity with a female under the age of 16 at the same time. He was charged originally in March of 2015 and then released on bail. The case focused on events which took place from December 2014 to February of 2015. Johnson was suspended by Sunderland after he was charged, but was allowed to return to the team after his bail was extended. However, sports company Adidas ended a sponsorship contract with him shortly afterwards.

Johnson was under contract with the Sunderland for 60,000 pounds a week until the end of the current season, which ends in May. He spent his youth career at Newcastle United and Middlesbrough and made his pro debut in a UEFA Cup game for Middlesbrough when he was just 17 years old. The native of Sunderland also spent time on loan with Watford and Leeds United. He played 120 games with Middlesbrough and scored 16 goals. Johnson joined Manchester City in 2010 and won the FA Cup, FA Community Shield and Premier League title with them, adding 15 goals in 97 appearances before joining Sunderland in 2012/13.

Johnson played a total of 141 contests with his hometown team and scored 22 goals before being sacked. He has played 358 career pro games and has 58 goals to his name. At one point Johnson had a bright England international future ahead of him. He played for the nation’s Under-19 team from 2005 to 2006 and the Under-21 squad between 2007 and 2009. He made his debut for the senior national side on May 24th 2010 in a World Cup warm up match. His full debut came later the same year in a contest against Hungary at London’s Wembley Stadium. In total, Johnson has made a dozen appearances for England with two goals under his belt.

Judge Jonathan Rose handed down the prison sentence and said the young victim was a Sunderland supporter who often waited after games to take photos of Johnson, who was her favourite player. The judge also said Johnson knew exactly how old the girl was. Rose commented, “You made a deliberate decision to engage in sexual activity with this young girl, no doubt in the expectation that you would get away with it. Your future as a professional footballer must be in doubt.”

The judge stated that Johnson had numerous chances to admit his guilt before he did. This meant the young girl had to endure a year of abuse by being called a liar and Sunderland fans also chanted this accusation about her at home matches. In addition, Johnson was ordered to pay 50,000 pounds of the prosecution’s costs of 67,132 pounds. The chief prosecutor of the case said Johnson doesn’t deserve any sympathy. Margaret Byrne, the chief executive of Sunderland, resigned from the position at the football club on March 8 because she said she shouldn’t have allowed Johnson to keep playing for the team after he admittedly kissed a 15-year-old.
