England hopes to keep ball rolling against Switzerland in Euro qualifier

With seventh-ranked England pumping in an impressive four goals against Bulgaria in their first Group G match of Euro 2012 qualifying, it’ll be interesting to see how they do against the solid defence of 17th ranked Switzerland in Basel on Sept. 7th.

England should be able to field the same starting 11 as they did against Bulgaria with the exception of centre-back Michael Dawson, who was carried off on a stretcher with a knee injury and is expected to miss about six weeks. England sits on top of the group with Montenegro, but Switzerland hasn’t played yet. However, they drew 0-0 with Australia in a friendly on Sept. 3.

An interesting sidebar to the game is that English-born defender Scott Sutter has been called up for Switzerland for the game.  The 24-year-old Sutter, who plays for Young Boys, has lived in Switzerland for almost nine years after growing up in England.

Hitzfeld also recalled fit-again forwards Marco Streller and Alex Frei for goalscoring help. But former Liverpool defender Philipp Degen is sidelined with mononucleosis. However, his twin brother David has been called up to replace injured midfielder Valentin Stocker.

Defenders Philippe Senderos and Mario Eggimann are also out for Switzerland. Xavier Margairaz is in to replace injured Hakan Yakin and Tranquillo Barnetta has pulled out due to fever with Marco Padalino taking his place. Goalkeeper Diego Benaglio could miss the game as his wife’s expecting a baby.

Switzerland has played England 20 times and has managed three wins and four draws while losing 13. The last time they beat them was in 1982.

Switzerland has only lost one of their last six games and that was 1-0 against Chile in the World Cup. Of course they also beat Spain 1-0 in the tournament and have only let in two goals in the last six games. Although England had a bad World Cup, they’ve only lost one of the last six games. The last time the two teams met was in February 2008 and England came out on top 2-1.

England might be too confident after the win against Bulgaria and goals will be hard to come by here, especially if Benaglio plays goal for Switzerland. This should be a close game and a one-goal win either way is a good choice, but I’m thinking it could end in a draw.

Sportsbook William Hill has England listed as the favourites with odds of 8/11, with a Swiss win at 10/3 and a draw at 11/5.
