In a bit of a surprise, England goalkeeper David James decided to join Championship club Bristol City on July 30 after turning down a chance to join Scottish Premier League team Celtic. James agreed to a one-year-deal with Bristol with an option for another season.

James is leaving fellow Championship team Portsmouth who were relegated from the Premier League after a brutal season both on and off the pitch. The goalie has over 50 caps for England and has been a regular under Fabio Capello, appearing at this summer’s World Cup in South Africa. James, who just turned 40, was a free agent after leaving Portsmouth and moved on a free transfer.

James will suit up for his new club against in the season opener against newly-promoted Millwall on Aug. 14. He hopes to lead the club into the Premier League and said he’s happy to play in Bristol because it’s close to his Exeter home. Bristol released a statement on its website that said James has passed his medical already.

While Portsmouth endured a terrible season in 2009-10, James helped lead them to the FA Cup Final at Wembley, where they were beaten by Chelsea. James had been linked with a few other clubs including Celtic, Sunderland, and Fulham, but it was reported that he didn’t want to leave his home.

James stated that he had offers to stay in the Premier League, but it was more important that he played for the right team and to be a good family man. He added that he had a long talk with Bristol chairman Steve Lansdown and was impressed by him and the ambition he showed for the club, which included the desire to earn promotion to the Premier League as well as plans for a new stadium.

James said the club is as ambitious as he is and that the south-western region of England hasn’t had a team in the Premier League and he’d like to change that. Bristol City finished 10th in the Championship last season.

Lansdown stated that he’s happy James has signed and hopes he can help lead the club to the highest level of football possible with his quality play in goal.
