The Guelph Storm breezed through the Memorial Cup schedule by winning every game in the group stage, but their hot streak came to a crushing halt on May 25 when they were beaten 6-3 by the Edmonton Oil Kings in the tournament final. The Memorial Cup is the annual North American ice hockey tournament to crown the continent’s junior champions and was held in London, Ontario from May 16 to 25.

The Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League were led by the line of Henrik Samuelsson, Edgars Kulda, and Mitch Moroz and went into the game against the Ontario Hockey League champions from Guelph after having to play a triple-overtime semifinal game against Val-d’Or of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League less than 48 hours earlier. Edmonton managed to win that marathon 4-3.

Guelph grabbed leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the first period, but Edmonton rallied with three goals in the second to pull in front 4-2. Guelph made it 4-3 early in the third, but Edmonton regained a two-goal lead just over a minute later. They then sealed the deal with an empty-net goal with just 86 seconds to play after Guelph had pulled their goaltender in a last-ditch attempt to tie the game. It’s Edmonton’s first Memorial Cup triumph since the 1966 season. Guelph players and fans were obviously disappointed with the result especially after winning 71 out of 92 contests this season.

The Oil Kings have now won at least 50 games in each of the past three seasons and have won the Western League title in two of those years. Samuelsson, a centre who was drafted by the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes, finished the game with a pair of goals and three assists. His line mate, Kulda of Latvia, scored a goal and two assists and Moroz added a goal and assist as the line scored a total of 10 points on the day.

Zack Mitchell, a draft pick of the Minnesota Wild, was Guelph’s top player in the game with a goal and assists while his line mates Kerby Rychel and Robby Fabbril each chipped in with a pair of points. The two teams met eight days earlier in the group stage of the Memorial Cup tournament with Guelph winning quite handily by a 5-2 margin.
