On Wednesday, Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel made some strong statements about not being wanted by the team, then backtracked later in the day saying he was just emotional and was happy to be in Philly playing for coach Andy Reid. The Eagles have a bye this week, and are 2-4 and in last place even after this past weekend’s potentially season-saving win over the Redskins.
“That sucks, doesn’t it?” said the 30-year-old cornerback, who has made four straight Pro Bowls since joining the Eagles in 2007. “Each trade deadline for your name to be flying around and you’re suppose to be the leader of this team.”
But a talk with Reid apparently put things in perspective for the disgruntled defensive back. “Earlier today, I let my emotions get the best of me,” said Samuel. “Everything’s good and I’m happy to be here. I had a talk with coach Reid this afternoon and I now have a better understanding of how business works in the NFL. Let’s get a win Sunday.”
Coach Reid also felt like they had a productive conservation:
TweetI am aware of how Asante felt and we have since talked,” We both left with a positive feeling going forward. As I have said previously, when we acquired [cornerbacks] Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Nnamdi Asomugha, we had received numerous calls on the availability of our cornerbacks. After discussing significant trade offers with other teams, we decided to keep all three cornerbacks on our team. Asante is a valuable member of our team and we appreciate all that he brings to this organization.
