Ducks Owner Trying to Steal NBA Kings from Sacramento

The owners of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings have until April 18 to ask the NBA for permission to move south to Anaheim, and a profile in Thursday’s Sacramento Bee suggests a large reason why the team might bolt is Henry Samueli, the billionaire who owns the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks. In the six years since Samueli bought the Ducks, he’s pled guilty to criminal charges and been suspended by the NHL.

“I would love to lure an NBA franchise,” Samueli said on the day he bought the Ducks, even admitting that stealing an NBA team for the putrid wasteland of Orange County was “one of the secondary motives” for purchasing the annoyingly named hockey team from the Disney corporation.

Samueli pled guilty to making false statements to investigators, but a federal judge later threw out the conviction and he was reinstated by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.

Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson, a former NBA point guard and coach, says he thinks the Kings will be leaving for Anaheim. The Kings, who haven’t been good since the days of Vlade Divac, Jason Williams and Chris Webber, are owned by the Maloofs, one of whom is married to one of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.
