On Sunday, both the European Tour’s BMW PGA Championship in England and the PGA Tour’s Byron Nelson Classic in Texas ended in playoffs. In England, Luke Donald became the new World No. 1 by beating the old No. 1 Lee Westwood on the first playoff hole, when Westwood put his second shot in the water. In Texas, rookie Keegan Braddley won his playoff when Ryan Palmer put his second shot in the water.
Donald becomes the third Englishman and just the 14th golfer overall to hold the No. 1 ranking in the 24-year history of the Official World Golf Rankings. Lee Westwood had held the top spot for 22 weeks — only Tiger Woods, Greg Norman, Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros, Ian Woosnam, Nick Price and Vijay Singh have held it longer.
Bradley was ranked 203rd in the world before getting his first career victory at the Byron Nelson, which was enough to move him up 109 spots to No. 94. His big claim to fame is that his aunt is LPGA legend Pat Bradley.
“I am so happy and I can’t believe this just happened, I really can’t,” said the 24-year-old Bradley after winning his first tournament and receiving a $1.17 million winner’s check. “This is a dream come true. I have been waiting for this my whole life.”
