On Monday, the Los Angeles Dodgers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, then later that night beat the Minnesota Twins 15-0 in one of the franchise’s most prolific offensive performances since migrating west from Brooklyn 54 years ago. Dodgers owner Frank McCourt is battling to keep his team from being taken over by Major League Baseball, an issue that a judge could decide as early as Tuesday.
For the first time in the team’s Los Angeles history, every Dodger in the starting lineup had at least one hit, one run and one run batted in. The Dodgers also tied an LA record with 25 hits in the game, thanks in part to manager Don Mattingly spurring a post-game protest with the official scorer to get Andre Ethier a hit on a fourth-inning ball that was originally ruled an error.
After the game, Mattingly didn’t have much to say about the impact of the bankruptcy filing on his players.
“It’s just one of those days,” said Mattingly. “Everything went our way tonight.”
Perhaps the most interesting thing to come out of the bankruptcy filing was who the Dodgers owe money to and how much:
- Manny Ramirez, $21 million
- Andruw Jones, $11 million
- the Chicago White Sox, $3.5 million to pay for Juan Pierre’s salary
- Vin Scully, $152,778
