One inning may have cost CC Sabathia the AL Cy Young and cost the Yankees the AL East and any chance of defending their World Series title. In the Yankees final regular season meeting with the Devil Rays, Sabathia entered the sixth inning with a 3-1 lead. He left after a bases loaded walk made it 4-3 Tampa, and was eventually charged with 7 runs in a 10-3 Devil Ray rout.

While the Yankees are still technically in first place at 92-61, it is the Devil Rays at 91-61 who control their own destiny for winning the division because the first tiebreaker is head-to-head record. Tampa’s win in the Bronx gave them a 10-8 regular season series victory over the Yankees, their first since 2005. The team that wins the division will host the Texas Rangers (84-68) in the first round, while the team that finishes second and settles for the wild card will have to start the postseason on the road against the Minnesota Twins (92-60), and should they advance play every subsequent series on the road.

For the second time in 10 days, Devil Rays ace David Price was able to keep pace with if not outdo Sabathia. Price improved to 18-7 with the victory, giving up three runs over six innings.  Ten days earlier at historic Tropicana Field, Price and Sabathia each threw eight shutout innings in a game that the Devil Rays eventually won 1-0 in 11 innings.

Here’s the remaining schedule for the Devil Rays, Yankees and Twins as the next 10 days will decide home-field advantage through the ALCS:

  • Tampa Bay Devil Rays (91-61) 10 games (6H/4A): 3SEA, 3BAL, 4@KC
  • New York Yankees (92-61) 9 games (3H/6A): 3BOS, 3@Tor, 3@Bos
  • Minnesota Twins (92-60) 10 games (4H/6A): 3@Det, 3@KC, 4TOR
