The Atlanta Braves had an off day on Thursday, so pitcher Derek Lowe allegedly spent his night off driving around drunk in his Porsche. Lowe was stopped around 10 pm, given a field sobriety test and charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving and failing to maintain lane. He was taken to the Atlanta City Jail, where he was released on $2,944 bail on Friday morning.
According to a Georgia State Police email, the arresting officer “detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage.” Lowe refused to take a breathalyzer. The pitcher’s Porsche was impounded.
So far the Braves, who were occupied Thursday with backlash from their pitching coach allegedly getting into a nasty verbal altercation with Giants fans in San Francisco last weekend, haven’t commented on Lowe’s arrest.
Video of Lowe coming out of jail on Friday morning is up on the CBS Atlanta website.
Lowe is 2-3 with a 3.21 ERA in six starts this season, and is scheduled to start Sunday afternoon against the St. Louis Cardinals at Turner Field in Atlanta. The Braves (13-13) are in third place in the NL East, four games behind the Philadelphia Phillies.
