On Tuesday, the New York Yankees placed captain Derek Jeter on the disabled list with a strained right calf, sidelining the star shortstop until at least June 29 as he is six hits shy of 3,000 for his career. If Jeter comes back on the 29th, he’ll have two home games against the Brewers to reach his milestone before the team goes on the road with three games against the New York Mets, then three in Cleveland.
What are the chances of Jeter coming roaring back off the DL and getting six hits in two days? This season, he’s played 62 games overall and had two four-hit games and 16 two-hit games.
Jeter, of course, is pretending all he cares about is playing and helping his team. “I guess the timing’s not very good,” said Jeter. “It’s a little bit frustrating, but even if I wasn’t at this point, I’d still be frustrated. I don’t like not playing. Whether it’s going for 3,000 hits or 100 hits, it doesn’t make a difference.”
Then again, the Yankees might be better off without Jeter. Jeter is hitting .260 with a .324 slugging percentage and .324 on-base percentage (yep, he’s slugging what his OBP is), which would all be career lows for a whole season. ESPNNewYork.com’s Wallace Matthews points out that Jeter’s light-hitting replacement, Eduardo Nunez, has a higher slugging percentage this season than the soon-to-be 37 captain.
