Derek Anderson Gets the Boot in Cleveland

No other team in the NFL besides maybe the Detroit Lions have been more disappointing than the Cleveland Browns. at least the Detroit Lions have an excuse as they have been trying to develop young talent like wide receiver Calvin Johnson and promising young quarterback Matthew Stafford, but the Cleveland Browns were one of the better teams in the league back in 2007 with Derrick Anderson coming out of virtually nowhere and leaving the team to 10 wins.

Back in 2007 the Cleveland Browns are making headlines almost on a weekly basis as they seem like one of the most promising young teams in the league led by quarterback that could be a perennial Pro Bowler in Derrick Anderson, but the success the short-lived as wide receiver Braylon Edwards went from a Pro bowl caliber wideout to the one receiving leader draws more balls than any other player and Anderson slipped back into mediocrity.

Even though Derek Anderson slowly got back to mediocre statusafter looking like one of the better quarterbacks in this league, but the Cleveland Browns weren’t all that worried as they had Hometown boy and promising young quarterback Brady Quinn waiting on the sidelines for his shots becomes starter.

Obviously the Cleveland Browns long-term plan was to have Brady Quinn as the starter behind center eventually, but they were planning on to write out the Derek Anderson hot streak which only basically lasted one season.

As a result Derek Anderson struggling, the Browns made the decision to make the switch at quarterback by giving Brady Quinn the shot he had been waiting for, but despite some early success, Quinn ultimately look like nothing more than a mediocre quarterback as well and the two quarterbacks went back and forth as the starter this past season with no set decision on which quarterback they would keep after last season.

Fortunately for Brady Quinn, the Cleveland Browns decided to go ahead and cut Derrick Anderson after they traded for Seattle Seahawks backup quarterback Seneca Wallace.

One of the main reasons for getting rid of Derek Anderson was that he was due quite a bit of money next season with a $2 million dollar roster bonus and $7.45 million dollars at season’s end. Think they made the smart play, but is that still remains to be seen as he might go somewhere else in blowup once again as are plenty teams looking for starters and backups around league at the quarterback position.
