The Denver Broncos released safety John Boyett on October 24 after the practice-squad player made an ass of himself during a night of drinking. According to local police, the 24-year-old punched and head butted a cab driver in the head and then dug a hole with a stolen shovel and tried to hide from police. He also head butted the window of a police car and told the cops to call Broncos’ general manager and executive vice president of football operations John Elway.
The Denver Post reported that Boyett began the night drinking at a pub called the Sports Book Bar & Grill. Patrons and employees there said he was making threats and was intoxicated. They claimed that he attempted to take food from a customer’s plate and was asked to leave the establishment. He then refused to pay his bill and threatened to hit a bartender.
Police were called and they hailed a taxi for Boyett. However, a few minutes later they received a message that the football player had assaulted the cab driver. When officers finally caught up to him they said Boyett was spitting and yelling and slammed his head into the window of their patrol car several times. He was then charged with harassment, theft, and third-degree assault.
It was the second time in just over a year that Boyett has been in trouble with the law. The player made the roster of the Indianapolis Colts last season as a rookie, but was then busted for resisting arrest and disorderly public intoxication in September of 2013 and was immediately cut from the squad. At the time, he told police that they couldn’t arrest him because he played for the Indianapolis Colts. Boyett then tried out for the Broncos this year, but the team waived him after its last preseason contest and was signed to the practice squad at the end of August.
The Broncos didn’t have too much to say about the latest incident by saying they were disappointed in his behaviour, but he should have received the message when he found out he was released. Boyett is now a free agent and was drafted in the sixth round by the Colts last year from the Oregon Ducks college team.
