Davis Love III had a hole-in-one on his way to a 6-under 64, good enough to give the 47-year-old a two-shot lead after the first round of the Honda Classic. Rory McIlroy was tied for second, while Tiger Woods was seven shots back after a 1-over 71. Love’s low round earned him the chance to talk more about becoming the first Ryder Cup captain to also play in the event since Arnold Palmer in 1963.

“I need to be ready for every week right now and do my best to move back up [the US Ryder Cup points standings],” said Love after his round. He has previously said he’ll play if he can earn his way on in the standings. Love started Thursday’s first round with four straight pars, then aced the 197-yard fifth hole. “I was parring along there, had not made a birdie yet then all of a sudden was 2 under,” said Love of his hole-in-one. “So that was a big boost.”

Despite his over-par score, Tiger said he felt like he played pretty well. “I hit a lot of pure putts today,” said Tiger. “They rolled over a lot of edges. They just didn’t quite go in. I didn’t get a whole lot out of my round. I hit the ball a lot better than I scored and I certainly putted well, and I hardly got anything out of the round. Hopefully [Friday’s second round] will be better.”

McIlroy has five top-five finishes in his last six events, but no wins to show for it.  Still he feels like he might be on the verge of breaking through. “I’m working harder than ever,” said McIlroy. “I haven’t really reaped the rewards of it yet. I’ve been very consistent, but I haven’t won. I’ve played three tournaments this year and had a couple of chances to win. I feel like it’s very close.”
