England midfielder David Beckham still has hopes of suiting up for the three lions again before his career’s over, but he plans on staying in America to play out the last year of his deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer.
Beckham talked with the Associated Press recently and said he’s not sure what the future holds after next season. He said he wants to play as long as his legs will allow him because he loves playing the game and he’s still as passionate about football as he ever was. He said he won’t pack it in until he stops having fun.
The ex-England captain signed a five-year deal with MLS four years ago for U.S. $32.5 million. However, while he has the option of buying out the last year of the contract, he said that’s the furthest thing on his mind as he’s looking forward to playing the last year of it in LA.
He said he likes living in California and his sons attend school there, so they consider it home. But he added he’d be on the next plane to London if England manager Fabio Capello asked him to play for his country again, to help them qualify for Euro 2012 in Ukraine and Poland. Beckham has been capped 115 times for England, a record for English outfield players.
He realizes he has to be in top form to be recalled to the team again and that it’s ultimately Capello’s decision. But while he knows he has to be on top of his game, he said he doesn’t have any plans to return to Europe to play on loan like he has done the past two seasons with Italian Serie A club AC Milan. But it’s rumoured that the decision was up to the Galaxy and they didn’t want him playing in Europe this winter as he missed most of the season due to an Achilles’ tendon injury, which also kept him out of this summer’s World Cup in South Africa.
However, it’s a long shot that Capello will name him the squad again as the manager said he’s looking to add some youth to the team. In fact, Capello ruled Beckham out of the squad a couple of months ago and suggested he play a farewell game for England to say goodbye to the supporters.
The 35-year-old Beckham said he’s about 85 per cent fit at the moment as is looking forward to the MLS playoffs. His team was beaten on penalties last season by Real Salt Lake. LA finished tied for the best record in MLS this season.
