With each passing day it appears that David Beckham will return to his homeland of England to continue his soccer career, at least for a few months that is. The midfield star, who plays for the Los Angeles Galaxy of MLS in North America, is being courted by several English Premier League (EPL) clubs at the moment. These include Everton, Sunderland, West Ham, Newcastle, and Tottenham Hotspur. However, at the moment it appears Tottenham has the edge as manager Harry Redknapp is ready to make a loan deal for Beckham if the Galaxy and Beckham agree to the terms.

The Galaxy is understandably wary about letting Beckham play in the EPL since he was injured the last time he went out on loan, which was last winter when he went to Italy to pay with AC Milan of Serie A. Beckham suffered a torn Achilles tendon and missed the summer’s World Cup for England in South Africa as well as most of the MLS season with Los Angeles. Beckham also played on loan for Milan the previous year and managed to do it injury-free.

The 35-year-old is still one of the most recognizable athletes in the world and has enough talent to contribute to any team he plays on. However, some people feel the clubs are also looking at him as a marketing tool as he’s bound to sell a few more tickets as well as replica jerseys, etc., especially Spurs since Beckham was born close by. Beckham said he’s looking for a team where he can get the most playing time. But this might be a problem with Spurs as they’re the best team on the list of possible places to go.

Spurs are enjoying a fine season and it’ll likely be harder for Beckham to get premium playing time with the club. Redknapp said if Beckham joins he’ll let midfielder David Bentley join another club on loan, possibly even Newcastle, and this will open up a spot for Beckham. But Beckham will still have right winger Aaron Lennon to compete with for playing time at Tottenham. While Newcastle would like to get their hands on Beckham, they could be satisfied with Bentley as an alternative choice.

Redknapp is impressed with Beckham’s desire to play the game as well as his skills. He said all of England’s players look up to him because of what he’s achieved in his career and the way he handles himself off of the pitch. He added that he’d like to get the deal done as soon as possible because Beckham will have to go back to America by March to get ready for the MLS season.

There shouldn’t really be a problem sorting out wages as Beckham’s one of the richest athletes in the world and shouldn’t be expecting too much in the way of compensation. But while Beckham said he’d like to play as much as possible to stay fit for the MLS season, some critics say the move is for personal reason. Some fans feel he just wants to play in England so he can be recalled to the national team to add to his 115 appearances, which is a record for an English outfield player. But whether that’s the case or he’s just being used to sell merchandise, there are millions of fans who’d love to see him on the pitch in England again as soon as possible.
