For years, the Spanish La Liga allowed each individual Primera Division club to negotiate its own television broadcasting deal. This meant the top clubs such as Barcelona and Real Madrid would typically rake in all the big money while the rest of the league’s teams had to fight over the table scraps. However, that has changed now, as the league itself has a television deal which sees all teams sharing the benefits and revenues. This enables the smaller and less glamorous clubs to at least make some decent money as they ride the coattails of the rich franchises. The new way of negotiating broadcasting rights should give the smaller teams some money to spend on better players in the transfer windows.
Friday August 12th has been circled on the calendar as the date of the final Major League Baseball game for New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez. The controversial 41-year-old native of New York City will leave the ball diamond for the final time against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on the 12th and will then begin a new chapter of his career early next year when he becomes an instructor and special adviser with the famous club. Rodriguez and the Yankees announced the player’s retirement before taking the field against the Cleveland Indians at Yankee Stadium on August 7th.

The UFC, which was recently sold for a sports-record $4 billion, has recently had its fair share of problems with alleged drug cheats. The mixed martial arts organization recently announced the third failed drug test in recent weeks when it suspended featherweight fighter Chad Mendes for two years. Both Jon Jones and Brock Lesnar also failed recent drug tests in the past few weeks. The 31-year-old Mendes of California said he didn’t knowingly use any banned substances, but said he won’t appeal his ban and is willing to accept the punishment handed down. The USADA (U.S. Anti-Doping Agency) released an official statement which said Mendes’ drug test came back positive as his urine sample showed signs of a growth hormone called GHRP-6 in his system.
