When WBC Middleweight Champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez of Mexico knocked out England’s Amir Khan in Las Vegas on May 7th it was a perfect example of a one-punch knockout. Khan, who had boxed well during the first five rounds, was stopped by the first telling right hand Alvarez was able to land and the bout was suddenly and dramatically over in the sixth round. Khan arguably won the first five rounds on points due to his speed, skill, and movement, but he just couldn’t handle the power of the bigger Alvarez.
When English Championship League clubs Brighton and Hove Albion and Middlesbrough squared off at Riverside Stadium on Saturday the match was being billed as the richest in soccer history. The winner would earn promotion into the English Premier League and would benefit from all the riches that go with it. It’s believed the promotion would be worth approximately $250 million to the winner due to the new $12 billion Premier League broadcasting deals which kick in with the 2016/17 season. However, the loser of the game would still have a second chance at promotion due to the English playoff system.
The 142nd edition of the Kentucky Derby was held at Churchill Downs in Louisville on Saturday, May 7th with the favourite Nyquist running to victory in a field of 20. The horse, which is named after NHL player Gustav Nyquist of the Detroit Red Wings, went into the famous event as the 2/1 favourite and ran the race in a time of 2:01.31. Danzing Candy took the early lead out of the gate for the first half mile and then Nyquist turned it up a notch to pass Gun Runner coming out of the last turn. Gun Runner ended up finishing third while Exaggerator finished in second place.
Sports fans around the world are debating whether or not Leicester City’s English Premier League title win this season is the biggest upset in sports history. Considering the odds at the start of the season of the small club capturing the crown were generally 5,000/1 it’s definitely an upset of huge proportions. Bookmakers all over the world will take a bit of a hit to the wallet if they took any wagers on Leicester pulling off the improbable, but it’s partly their own fault. Even though the team was nearly relegated last year, it’s hard to see where the 5,000/1 odds came from in a 20-team league.
