There are a few NHL teams celebrating special anniversaries in the 2016/17 season, but of course just one of them will be hosting the All-Star weekend. It’s now been confirmed that the honour will go to Los Angeles as the Kings will be celebrating their 50th season in the league. However, the St. Louis Blues, Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins also launched their NHL franchises in 1967 along with the Minnesota North Stars and California Seals, two franchises which no longer exist. In addition, the Toronto Maple Leafs will be celebrating their 100th birthday as will the league itself as it was launched back in 1917.
It certainly wasn’t pretty, but the Denver Broncos were extremely successful at containing this season’s best NFL offence in their 24-10 Super Bowl victory over the Carolina Panthers at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on February 7th. Panthers’ 26-year-old quarterback Cam Newton was held in check and his 39-year-old counterpart Peyton Manning didn’t really have much to do for the Broncos on his way to his second Super Bowl victory. It was Manning’s record 200th NFL win, including the playoffs, and he may be back for another season later this year.
The NFL season comes to its thrilling climax this weekend when the Carolina Panthers square off against the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50 at the new Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The AFC champion Broncos will be aiming for their third Super Bowl title on February 7th while the AFC winners Carolina will be looking for their first ever crown. The Panthers were the league’s best team this season with a 15-1 record and captured the NFC South Division quite easily. The Broncos finished their campaign at 12-4 and took the AFC West Division.

Novak Djokovic of Serbia tied a men’s singles tennis tournament record in Melbourne on Sunday, January 31 when he won the Australian Open for the sixth time. The 28-year-old beat Andy Murray of Scotland in three straight sets 6-1, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) to equal the previous mark of half a dozen wins which was set by Roy Emerson of Australia. Djokovic reached the final this year by beating Roger Federer in the semis while Murray made it by taking out Milos Raonic of Canada. Emerson won his six Australian Opens in a short period of time as he achieved the feat between 1961 and 1967.
