NHL fans have spoken and when it comes to electing the four captains for the upcoming 2016 All-Star weekend in Nashville, Tennessee, the results are a bit of a mixed bag. The fans voted for 43-year-oldforward Jaromir Jagr of the Florida Panthers along with Chicago Blackhawks’ forward Patrick Kane and forwards John Scott of the Arizona Coyotes and Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals. Jagr hails from the Czech Republic while Ovechkin is Russian, Kane is an American and Scott comes from Canada.
Fans from across the globe were able to vote for the captains of the four NHL divisions for the All-Star weekend which will feature four teams playing in a three-on-three mini tournament. The balloting was open from December 1st 2015 and just wrapped up on New Year’s Day. The top vote-getter from each of the league’s four divisions was then named as the captain of his team. Jagr will skipper the Atlantic Division while Kane will wear the C for the Central Division, Ovechkin will lead the Metropolitan Division and Scott is the king of the Pacific.
Boxing star Manny Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 Kos) of the Philippines has disappointed thousands of fans by announcing his opponent for his April 9th bout. Pacquiao has decided to fight American Timothy Bradley (33-1-1, 13 Kos) for the third time rather than face a fresh opponent such as Terence Crawford of the USA or England’s Amir Khan. Pacquiao and Bradley each have a decision win against each other, but most fans and members of the media believe Pacquiao won both contests.
Headlines around the world claimed that the 27-year-old Pacquiao was robbed when Bradley was handed a very controversial 12-round split decision over him in June of 2012. The scoring in that Las Vegas fight read 115-113 and 115-113 for Bradley and 115-113 for Pacquiao. The Filipino then lost his second consecutive fight when Juan Manuel Marquez knocked him cold in the sixth round just six months later. Pacquiao bounced back with a unanimous decision over Brandon Rios a year later.
Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech set a brand new English Premier League record at the end of the year when he recorded his 170th clean sheet. The 33-year-old native of the Czech Republic also holds the league record for clean sheets in a single season with 24, which he set in the 2004/05 campaign. Cech set the new mark in a 2-0 win over Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium in London on December 28th. The win vaulted Arsenal to the top of the standings as the club hopes to win the league title for the first time in 12 years.
However, Cech earned most of his clean sheets while playing with another London club, Chelsea. The keeper earned 162 clean sheets while playing with the Stamford Bridge outfit and his shutout against Bournemouth was his eighth of the season for Arsenal. Cech joined the Gunners last summer after former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho released him. The move backfired spectacularly on Mourinho as his squad got off to its worst-ever start in the Premier League by losing nine of its first 16 games while Arsenal led the league on January 1st.
The task for the New York Jets was simple on Sunday, January 3rd. All they had to do to make the NFL playoffs was to beat the Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo. If successful they’d be in the postseason for the first time in five years. However, they failed miserably as the Jets were downed 22-17 by the Bills. It also didn’t help matters that New York quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was intercepted three times in the fourth quarter.
Fitzpatrick was trying to make the playoffs for the first time in his 10-year NFL career and had been playing well over the past five weeks with just one interception and 13 touchdown passes. Fitzpatrick had gone 5-0 over that stretch and put his team in excellent position to make the playoffs with a win over Buffalo on the final day of the campaign. Things fell apart for the veteran when the game was on the line in the final quarter though and the Jets weren’t able to recover.
