Fans can buy the ground Derek Jeter’s walked on

It’s a well-known fact that sports fans will buy just about anything related to their favourite teams and players. This notion will be put to the test once again when fans of the New York Yankees will be able to buy dirt that shortstop Derek Jeter has walked on. This of course isn’t just any old dirt. It will be collected from the infields of the ball parks that the retiring Yankees’ skipper has played on.

The marketing scheme was thought up by Steiner Sports, which is the official collectibles firm of the famous baseball club. Steiner Sports will be selling plaques which feature a capsule filled with dirt from the infield of Yankee Stadium. Again, this isn’t just any old dirt though since it supposedly comes from some of the legendary player’s most famous and historical games.

NBA considers soccer-style midseason tournament

According to Adam Silver, the commissioner of the NBA, the basketball league is considering introducing a mid-season tournament to spice things up. Silver said he’d like to make things more interesting for the fans and is talking about holding a soccer-style event such as the English FA Cup or League Cup. Silver spoke to the press recently down in Las Vegas, where the basketball summer league is being held.

He said the English Football Association (FA) holds a tournament each year in which all of the league’s teams participate in during the regular season. Some weeks the soccer divisions are put on hold while the teams compete in the cup tournament. The FA Cup is open to all types of soccer teams, even the non-professional clubs, while the League Cup is contested by England’s 92 pro outfits.

Chicago Cubs file lawsuit against fake mascot

Most pro sports teams in North America have some type of mascot on hand at their games to keep the kids happy. The mascot is usually some guy decked out in an animal uniform with a big removable head. Over in Chicago, there’s an unofficial mascot roaming the streets near Wrigley Field, which is the home park of Major League Baseball’s Chicago Cubs. This furry fellow is known as ‘Billy Cub,’ but he’s not associated with the ball club in anyway and is basically an unofficial mascot.

It appears Billy Cub has been hanging around the Wrigleyville area for seven years now and many visitors and casual fans just assume he’s the team’s mascot. The Cubs have asked Billy several times to move on, but haven’t had any success in getting rid of him. They’ve now decided that enough’s enough and have filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court to have the unauthorized mascot removed from the area. The lawsuit is against Patrick Weier, John Paul Weier, and three other unnamed people who have allegedly portrayed ‘Billy Cub’ over the years.
