Edmonton Oil Kings capture Memorial Cup

The Guelph Storm breezed through the Memorial Cup schedule by winning every game in the group stage, but their hot streak came to a crushing halt on May 25 when they were beaten 6-3 by the Edmonton Oil Kings in the tournament final. The Memorial Cup is the annual North American ice hockey tournament to crown the continent’s junior champions and was held in London, Ontario from May 16 to 25.

The Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League were led by the line of Henrik Samuelsson, Edgars Kulda, and Mitch Moroz and went into the game against the Ontario Hockey League champions from Guelph after having to play a triple-overtime semifinal game against Val-d’Or of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League less than 48 hours earlier. Edmonton managed to win that marathon 4-3.

Josh Beckett pitches Dodgers first no-hitter since 1996

Los Angeles Dodgers right-handed pitcher Josh Beckett went through a miserable 2013 season as he was winless and it ended with surgery. He seems to be back better than ever now though as he threw his first MLB no-hitter in a 6-0 whitewashing of the Philadelphia Phillies on May 25. It was also the first no-hitter in Major League Baseball this year.

Beckett had a nerve condition last summer and wasn’t able to feel the fingertips in his right hand, but now that he’s healthy he’s pitching like he used to. Which means opposing batters better watch out as the former World Series MVP winner, three-time All-Star and two-time World Series winner is in top form. Against the Phillies Beckett managed to strike out six batters and walked three of them, but none of the Phillies players came anywhere close to getting a hit off of him.

Carcillo and Prust, two more player bans in the NHL

The NHL has come under fire from some fans as the league is being accused of protecting officials, but not the players. The hockey league handed New York Rangers forward Dan Carcillo a 10-game suspension for pushing a linesman during an altercation in a playoff game between New York and the Montreal Canadiens. However, they gave Canadiens forward Brandon Prust just a two-game ban for breaking the jaw of Rangers centre Derek Stepan with an illegal hit to the head.

Stepan was injured at the 2:45 mark of the first period in the third game of the Eastern Conference final series. He left the game and immediate x-rays proved negative. Stepan then returned to the contest, but x-rays were again taken after the match and this time they revealed a break in his jaw. He ended up playing about 17 minutes after returning, but was then scheduled for surgery after the break was discovered.

Mexican World Cup players banned from sex, booze and beef

Mexican football players might be asking themselves if the World Cup down in Brazil this summer will really be worth it. This is because team manager Miguel Herrera has banned them from having sex once the tournament kicks off on June 12 until it comes to a conclusion just over a month later on July 13. Herrera backed up his strict suggestion by telling the Mexican media that if a player can’t go 20 days to a month without having intercourse then they’re not cut out to be a professional football player.

However, Herrera hasn’t stopped there since the boss is also putting his foot down by banning his players from consuming alcohol while in Brazil as well as beef. He added that the players are going to be down there to try to win a World Cup, not to have a party. Herrera isn’t the only football manager to put his foot down either when it comes to telling his players what they can and can’t do this summer.
