Los Angeles Clippers owner banned for life and fined $2.5 million

Donald Sterling, the controversial owner of the Los Angeles Clippers NBA team, has put his foot in his mouth once too often and will now be forced to pay for it. The NBA banned Sterling for life on April 29 and also hit him with a $2.5 million fine for making racial comments in a private conversation with his reported girlfriend. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also said he will attempt to force the 80-year-old Sterling to sell the franchise.

Silver held a news conference and said the league investigated the phone conversation, which was made public by TMZ, and is distraught with Sterling’s views and the hateful opinions he expressed about African Americans on the tape. Sterling is no longer allowed to attend any NBA practices and games and isn’t allowed to be present at any of the club’s facilities and offices. In addition, he is banned from attending board meetings and from making any player personnel decisions.

Dani Alves eats banana after racist fan throws it at him

Brazilian defender Dani Alves of Spanish La Liga soccer club Barcelona FC has been the victim of racist abuse in the past, but he says fighting back against it seems to be a war that can’t be won. Alves was playing in a league game against Villarreal on April 27 when a fan threw a banana at him while he was about to take a corner kick. The player then bent down to pick it up, peeled it back and took a bite out of the fruit.

Alves figured that eating the banana would somehow deflate the racist taunt and add some humor to a sorry situation. He also thought that taking a bite out of it would provide him with some potassium and a much-needed boost of energy. After the match, which Barcelona won 3-2 to keep their league title hopes alive, the player told the press, “I don’t know who threw the banana but I want to thank him. It gave me the energy to put two more crosses in for our goals.”
