Monday Night Football: Bengals @ Ravens

The first Monday Night Football game of the 2012 NFL regular season is a divisional clash between two teams that made the playoffs last season as the Baltimore Ravens host the Cincinnati Bengals.  The Ravens are seven-point home favorites (-335 if you prefer the money line), and the Over/Under is at 41.5 points. The Ravens won both meetings with the Bengals last season, going 1-0-1 against the spread.

Both games last season went over. Prior to that, the Bengals had won five of their last eight games against the Ravens and going 6-2 ATS. Before last season, the six of the previous seven Bengals-Ravens games went Under.

Neither team faired well against the spread at the end of last season.  The Bengals were 1-6-2 ATS over their last nine games; the Ravens 2-4 ATS over their last six overall and 1-4-1 ATS over their last six road games.

NFL Rookie Quarterbacks Week 1: Most Passing Yards?

Five rookie quarterbacks will be making their NFL regular season debuts on Sunday.  Which rookie will throw for the most yards? The betting favorite is number one overall pick Andrew Luck of the Indianapolis Colts.  After that, it’s between the second overall pick, Robert Griffin III of the Washington Redskins, and third-round pick Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks.

Two other first rounders, Miami’s Ryan Tannehill and Cleveland’s Brandon Weeden are also in the mix.

For what it’s worth, Wilson threw for the most yards of the five in the preseason.  RGIII takes over the team that averaged the most passing yards last season, while Luck’s Colts averaged the least passing yards last season.  RGIII and Luck both face teams that allowed a lot of passing yards last season, while Tannehill faces the defense that allowed the least passing yards last season.  Below, we have the odds as well as a complete breakdown of opponents, preseason stats and last year’s team stats.

NFL Week 1: Eagles @ Browns

As disappointing as the Philadelphia Eagles were last season, they did start 2011 by blowing out a crappy team on the road, winning 31-13 in St. Louis.  As they try to erase last year’s disappointment they face a similar Week 1 task on Sunday as they visit the Cleveland Browns as nine-point favorites (+440 if you prefer the money line).

The Eagles did finish 2011 on a four-game winning streak, with those four final wins all coming by 13 points or more.  In fact, only two of Philly’s eight wins in 2011 came by a touchdown or less. The Eagles were also better on the road, going 5-3, with three double-digit wins.

The Browns started 2011 with a 10-point home loss to the Bengals, and then ended 2011 on a six-game losing streak. Three of Cleveland’s four wins last season came at home. Of Cleveland’s 12 losses, six were by 10 points or more, including three home losses.
