The visiting New York Mets twice took the lead in extra innings on Tuesday night against the Washington Nationals, but couldn’t hold either one and lost 7-6 in 12 innings. The win coupled with a Miami Marlins loss earlier in the night, gives the Nationals sole possession of first place in the topsy-turvy National League East. Washington’s 19-year-old outfielder Bryce Harper had the game-winning RBI single.
The Mets took a 5-4 lead in the top of the 10th on a wild pitch, but the Nats extended the game thanks to an error, a botched double-play ball, a wild pitch, and another error on a double-play ball. Then Scott Hairston homered in the top of the 12th to give the Mets another lead, only to have Ian Desmond tie the game with an RBI double. After that, the Nationals loaded the bases after another wild pitch and a pair of walks before Harper sent the home crowd happy with his walkoff single.
This week the PGA Tour heads to Memphis, Tennessee for the St. Jude Classic, the last tune-up before the US Open. One of this week’s co-favorites last year’s US Open champ, Rory McIlroy, who has missed three consecutive cuts including last week at the Memorial. Still, McIlroy is at 9/1 to win, as is American Zach Johnson. The next best bet is Dustin Johnson at 22/1.
Past St. Jude winners competing this week include David Toms (2003, 2004) and Brian Gay (2009).
Here are your 2012 St. Jude Classic odds for all the top competitors:
- Rory McIlroy, Northern Ireland (World Ranking: 2) 9/1
- Zach Johnson, USA (16) 9/1
- Dustin Johnson, USA (20) 16/1
- Brandt Snedeker, USA (26) 22/1
- Graeme McDowell, Northern Ireland (21) 25/1

Bellator Fighting Championships will once again head to the Sunshine State as the promotion will host Bellator 72 from The University of South Florida’s Sun Dome in Tampa on July 20 LIVE on MTV2 and in HD on EPIX. The night will feature the Season 6 Welterweight Tournament Finals as the explosive Karl “Psycho” Amoussou takes on Bryan “The Beast” Baker, plus it’s the semifinals of the Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament and the highly anticipated trilogy fight between Waachiim Spirtwolf and Marius Zaromskis.
For Amoussou, the French natural born finisher has produced fireworks throughout his impressive tournament run, collecting a devastating submission victory over Chris Lozano and a split-decision win against David Rickels in a spectacular fight in the tournament semifinals. Only one win away from a guaranteed title shot, “Psycho” knows what’s on the line July 20.
When he’s not busy dropping F-Bombs on reporters, or making regrettable statements about Fidel Castro, Ozzie Guillen is a very good baseball manager.
He won the World Series with the 2005 Chicago White Sox, and generated interest in that team in a city that is Cubs-crazy.
But it all fell apart near the end of the 2011 season, and Ozzie went off to Miami to manage the Marlins. The Sox stuck to their formula of bringing back former players, hiring Robin Ventura to be their new manager.
In Ozzie’s School of Management: Lessons From the Dugout, the Clubhouse, and the Doghouse, veteran Chicago Tribune columnist Rick Morrissey delves into the life of the funny and charismatic Guillen.
Morrissey takes you behind the scenes with Guillen and highlights the verbose and colorful way Guillen deals with players and the issues that come with running a big league club.
