Texas Rangers backup catcher Yorvit Torrealba was spending the offseason playing winter ball in his native Venezuela, but won’t be doing any more of that this winter or next winter. Torrealba was called out on strikes on Friday and responded by getting in the umpire’s face and striking the ump in the face mask with an open hand. Monday, the Venezuelan league suspended him for 66 games.
The suspension covers the remainder of this season and all of the next, but doesn’t carry over into the majors, where Torrealba still has one year left on his contract with the Texas Rangers. Here’s video of the incident (via USA Today), showing this was no love tap on the mask:
Torrealba has issued a statement apologizing to just about everyone including all the children of the world, and has reportedly personally apologized to the umpire he assaulted.
It was quite a night for New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees: his team clinched the NFC South title and he broke Dan Marino’s 17-year-old record for most passing yards in a season. At home on Monday Night Football, Brees kept passing in the final minutes to break the record despite a 22-point lead over the Atlanta Falcons, breaking the record on a short TD pass that closed out the scoring at 45-16.
The Falcons had already clinched their own playoff spot as one of the NFC’s two wild cards, and could very well return to New Orleans in two weeks for a first round playoff game. At least one Falcon player told cbssports.com that he was upset that Brees kept throwing for the record with the game out of reach, but the Falcon wasn’t willing to give his name. “No need for that,” said the timid, upset Falcon. “It came on our watch, but it didn’t have to come that way. We won’t forget it.”
UFC 141 is this Friday, with the main event being the return of Brock Lesnar and the UFC debut of Alistair Overeem. In this video, Overeem talks about how he will finish Lesnar, even giving the amount of time he’ll need to do it.
That’s bold talk from the talented kickboxer. Friday night we’ll see if he can back it up. Personally, I like Lesnar to weather any storm Overeem presents, get him to the ground and pound him out.
UFC fighter Urijah Faber’s sister Michaella Tastad was involved in a serious car accident in late-November that forced doctors to place in her in a medically-induced coma. She suffered a collapsed lung, a bruised spleen and significant head trauma.
Doctors had to remove part of her skull in order to insert a shunt to drain all the fluid. That entailed shaving her part of her head. Faber, known for his long locks, decided to shave his head in a sign of solidarity and love for his ailing sister. Take a look.
