Brock Lesnar Retires From MMA

Alistair Overeem had quite an eventful night for his first appearance in the UFC. He used his legs and knees to do damage to Brock Lesnar’s body and needed just 2:26 to finish the former champ.

Overeem garnered himself a shot at UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos with the victory and also sent Lesnar into retirement.

“My hat’s off to Alistair Overeem,” Lesnar told Joe Rogan after the fight. “I’ve had a difficult couple of years with my disease and I’m going to officially say tonight was the last time you’re going to see me in the Octagon.”

Lesnar went on to say that he promised his wife and kids that if he won against Overeem he would get a title shot and that would be his last fight. Overeem made quick business of Lesnar, and now Lesnar has called it a career.

GWAA: Luke Donald < Yani Tseng

Luke Donald racked up yet another award for his pretty good 2011 as he was named the Golf Writers Association of America’s Male Player of the Year.  But when he picks up his award on the eve of next year’s Masters, he’ll be in the presence of a golfer who had an even better 2011: the GWAA’s Female Player of the Year, Yani Tseng.

Donald was awfully consistent in 2011.  He won four times worldwide and won both money lists (becoming the first golfer to officially do that even though Tiger Woods unofficially did it lots of times without actually being a member of the European Tour). In 19 PGA Tour events in 2011, Donald had 12 top-10 finishes. For his efforts he got 88% of the vote from the GWAA.

Is Tom Brady Injured?

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady missed practice on Wednesday, but the team is denying a report that he hurt his left shoulder. Brady, who allegedly got an x-ray on his shoulder, returned to practice on Thursday in front of reporters. A team spokesman said Brady was absent on Wednesday for a non-medical matter, adding “If there was an injury then it would be on the injury report.”

A Boston-area cable sports network reported that the team wanted Brady checked for a separated shoulder after their win last Saturday and that the x-rays revealed that Brady was “all set.” Brady also sat down for an interview with ESPN mascot Chris Berman on Thursday, so maybe that’s painful enough.

NFL Week 17: Playoff Scenarios, Lines & Predictions

On the final Sunday of the NFL’s regular season and the first day of 2012, as many as 12 games could have playoff implications, determining which teams get the final seven playoff spots, and how the 12 playoff teams will be seeded. We’ve broken down all the possibilities and have juggled our crystal balls to determine how everything will shake out.

Early Games:

Bills +11 @ Patriots
Patriots clinch home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs with a win. The Bills may have beat Tebow last week, but the Patriots win this one.

Panthers +8 @ Saints
The Saints need to win this and have the 49ers lose to the Rams to get the NFC’s No. 2 seed and a first-round bye. The Saints should take care of their business.
