UFC Fighters Attacked by Police Dogs

It’s every fight fan’s dream — watching Dan Hardy get mauled by a vicious police dog. I kid — but several UFC stars, including Hardy, Frank Mir, Stephan Bonnar and Forrest Griffin, attended the 21st Annual K-9 Trials in Las Vegas. They took part in the demonstration and let the dogs show how they make people “submit”.

UFC 137 Free Picks

We’ve gone 14-4 with our UFC free picks over the last few events, and we’re hoping to provide you with some more winners for UFC 137: Penn vs. Diaz. A quick note: at the time of this writing, no odds were available for the Curran/Jorgensen fight, so that won’t be included here. However, we will add an upset special from the prelims. Here we go…

Bart Palaszewski +245 vs. Tyson Griffin -290

Griffin had a horrible 2010, dropping all three of his fights in the Octagon. He came back with a unanimous decision win over Manny Gamburyan in June at UFC Live on Versus. Palaszewski is a very experienced fighter who wreaked havoc in the WEC before it was folded into the UFC. He had a 4-fight win streak that was stopped by Kamal Shalorus in Decemeber, but Palaszewski is a matchup nightmare for Griffin. I really like “Bartimus” in this bout for the upset win. Take Palaszewski +245.

Lackey Will Get Tommy John Surgery

The Boston Red Sox and their fans likely won’t have pitcher John Lackey to kick around next year, as he’s scheduled to get Tommy John surgery and will likely miss the entire 2012 season. Lackey struggled mightily in 2011, going 12-12 in 28 starts and putting up an astronomical 6.41 ERA, and was involved in several controversies during and after Boston’s epic September implosion.

New Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington made the announcement during his own introductory press conference on Tuesday, and hinted that Lackey could use the time off to get his head right as well as his arm. “He’s been going through a lot,” Cherington said of Lackey. “I think he’s closer to resolving some of that stuff than he was a year ago. But maybe it is an opportunity for a fresh start physically and mentally.”

Donald Feels Persecuted by PGA Tour

Earlier this week, the PGA Tour decided to push back mailing ballots for their Player of the Year award until after next week’s HSBC Champions event in Shanghai, China — and World Number One Luke Donald is suggesting the tour is out to get him. Donald, who has already wrapped up the money title and Vardon Trophy for low scoring average, is talking conspiracy.

“I think the decision to add HSBC is a little sketchy,” said Donald, who clinched the money title with his win on Sunday at the Children’s Miracle Network Classic at Disney World, and is the likely favorite to win the Player of the Year award. “Why suddenly change the rule the day after Disney? It doesn’t make much sense to me. … I feel like even if I went to Shanghai and won, they’d find another event to add.
