New York Yankees infielders Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez were both injured on Sunday and sat out the second game of a doubleheader in Baltimore. They’re both expected to also miss Monday’s series finale. Jeter bruised his knee after fouling a ball off it in Sunday’s first game, while A-Rod has a lingering issue with a sore left thumb, which has gotten worse recently.
“He’s gimping around pretty good,” Joe Girardi said of Jeter, who was DHing on Sunday and became the Yankees all-time leader in games played. “After the game, once the adrenaline was gone, it got really sore …he’s day to day.” X-rays of the knee showed nothing broken, but the Yankees expect him to be out Monday. They hope he’ll be able to play sometime in this week’s series against the Boston Red Sox, who now lead New York by two games in the American League East.
Dustin Johnson moved up to a career-best No. 4 in the Official World Golf Rankings with his win at The Barclays on Saturday, after the PGA Tour’s first playoff event was shortened to 54 holes because of Hurricane Irene. It was Johnson’s first win of the year and also made him the first golfer since Tiger Woods to go straight from college to the PGA Tour and win in each of his first four seasons.
Johnson’s swing coach Butch Harmon wasn’t shy about making the Tiger comparison:
With the NFL regular season fast approaching, we at SportsUntapped are taking our crystal balls out of storage and examining each team’s full 16-game schedule to prognosticate how the 2011 season will play out. We’ll look at all 32 teams and reveal each one’s final record. Next up: Eli Manning and the New York Giants, who will be trying to return to the postseason after missing out the past two seasons.
New York Giants
Last year’s record: 10-6.
Vegas Over/Under on 2011 Regular Season Wins: 9.5.
First four games:
Sept. 11 at Washington, 4:15 p.m.
Sept. 19 St. Louis, 8:30 p.m.
Sept. 25 at Philadelphia, 1 p.m.
Oct. 2 at Arizona, 4:05 p.m.
If the Giants don’t stumble in their nationally televised opener against the new and improved Donovan McNabb-less Redskins, they should manage a 3-1 start.

We’ll look at all 32 teams and reveal each one’s final record. Next up: Josh Freeman and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Last year’s record: 10-6.
Vegas Over/Under on 2011 Regular Season Wins: 8.
First four games:
Sept. 11 Detroit, 1 p.m.
Sept. 18 at Minnesota, 1 p.m.
Sept. 25 Atlanta, 4:15 p.m.
Oct. 3 Indianapolis, 8:30 p.m.
A 2-0 start looks likely for the Buccaneers, and then can they steal one of their next home games against the Falcons or Colts. Probably, so we’ll put Tampa Bay at 3-1 after their first four contests.
