O’Hair Hits Fan, Saves Life

Last Fourth of July, Sean O’Hair hit a 25-year-old fan in the temple on his last hole at the AT&T National. On Tuesday, the fan met O’Hair and thanked him — while getting checked out for a concussion after getting hit, the fan was told by the doctor to check out a lump on his throat, allowing him to catch a malignant tumor in his thyroid early and now be cancer-free.

“We had a little battle on what to say,” said Chris Logan, the lucky fan who’s a former caddie from West Chester, PA. “He hit me in the head and then helped me out with the cancer diagnosis. So that was pretty funny. He’s a really nice guy, glad to finally meet him.” Logan was a fan of O’Hair even before the blow to the head.

Mets Pound Tigers 16-9, Have Scored 52 Runs in 4 Games

The New York Mets took a 4-0 lead in the first inning of Wednesday’s game against the Detroit Tigers, and never trailed as they went on to win 16-9 to continue a four-game winning streak powered by tons of runs. The Mets have set a franchise record with 52 runs scored over those four games, scoring 14 or more three times and no fewer than eight runs, and also winning by seven runs or more three times.

After closing out their last series in Texas with wins of 14-5 and 8-5, the Mets opened this series in Detroit with a 14-3 win before Wednesday’s rout. Surprisingly, the Mets didn’t hit a home run Wednesday, and only homered in one of the games during their four-game win streak.  Still, they managed to pound out a combined 69 hits, one shy of a team record for four games.

BJJ Breakage: Disfigured Toe

Not for the faint of heart, but definitely for your inner sicko. This is a pic that was tweeted out by UFC fighter, and former WEC champion, Miguel Torres. Apparently a student at his school did not tap out on a toe hold. And this is the result of that epic failure to do so.

If you are fighting in the UFC, maybe you don’t tap. If you are a weekend warrior taking some BJJ classes, you tap. Maybe it was a freak accident, but let this be a lesson to all of the budding BJJ practitioners out there!

Cliff Lee Blanks Red Sox For Third Straight Shutout

Philadelphia ace Cliff Lee became the first Phillie since 1950 to pitch three consecutive shutouts as he limited the Boston Red Sox to two hits on Tuesday night in a 5-0 win. Lee hasn’t allowed a run in 31 consecutive innings, 10 shy of the franchise record set by Grover Cleveland Alexander 100 years ago, but Lee and the Phillies aren’t trying to make too much of June accomplishments.

Lee has had a remarkable June — 5-0 with an 0.21 ERA, just one earned run allowed over 42 innings — but he’s had months nearly that good in October and still has no World Series rings to show for it. “We expect to win the World Series,” Lee said of his team. “I’m not counting the innings. I want to throw a shutout every inning, every time I go out there.
