Reyes-Less Mets Still Pound Pirates

Playing without star shortstop Jose Reyes, who will miss 3-7 days on bereavement leave to mourn the loss of his paternal grandmother, the New York Mets still found a way to pound out 15 hits and beat the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3 in the opener of a four-game series. Josh Thole’s two-run double in the bottom of the seventh broke open a 3-3 game and put the Mets ahead for good.

While rumors have had Reyes being traded sometime this season before becoming a free agent next offseason, the Dominican shortstop has been having a career year for the mediocre Mets. Reyes leads the majors in hits (76), multi-hit games (26) and triples (8), is tied for the Major League lead in steals (19), and leads the National League in doubles (17).  He has a six-game hitting streak going, and is hitting .519 over that span.

Travis Browne’s Superman Punch

In MMA, the “Superman” punch is often tried but rarely landed. Travis “Hapa” Browne executed one perfectly at UFC 130, and it knocked Stefan “Skyscraper” Struve into la-la land.

Browne remains undefeated at 7-0-1 after the win against Struve. He talked to MMA Heat about his fight.

“He does a good job of extending his hands out and it messes with your punches,
you can’t get anything clean. And so It was one of those things where we started seeing him progress
in that sense, and become more defensive when somebody would come in on him. That being said, it was one of our things to attack hard, separate, come out and be explosive again right as soon as he was coming in.

“I expected a three round war … I was talking with Christian Morecraft and he was like “Man, that guy never dies. He is like that cockroach that you are stepping on and stepping on and he keeps running from you and you’re like DAMMIT.” I am not saying he is a cockroach, but, you know what I mean?”

The Memorial Odds: Donald Favored Over Mickelson

This week, the PGA Tour heads to Dublin, Ohio for The Memorial, where Luke Donald will tee off for the first time as World No. 1 in one of the final tune-ups before the US Open.  Donald is a slight betting favorite at 9/1, with the next highest-ranked player in the field, World No. 4 Phil Mickelson, a close second at 12/1 odds.

While Donald has been remarkably consistent with top 10 finishes, his win at last week’s BMW PGA Championship in England was just his second win at a stroke play tournament in the past five years. Other golfers to watch this week include defending champion Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy and Matt Kuchar.

Here are The Memorial 2011 Odds for all the top contenders:

  • Luke Donald, England (1) 9/1
  • Phil Mickelson, USA (4) 12/1
  • Matt Kuchar, USA (7) 18/1
