Ishikawa to Donate 2011 Golf Earnings to Japan Victims

Japan’s Ryo Ishikawa, a 19-year-old golf sensation, has pledged to donate all the money he wins in golf tournaments this year to relief for victims of the earthquake and tsunami in his native country. He’s also pledging another 100,000 yen (about $1,207) for every birdie he makes this year. The nine-time winner on the Japan Tour hopes his total donation will be over $2 million.

“I feel thrilled,” said the 19-year-old, who was No. 3 on the Japan Tour’s money list last year. “My goal is 200 million yen (about $2.4 million). I have enough money to spend for my golf. I still have savings. I believe this is the most positive way for me to spend money.”

Zito in Car Crash Night Before Opener

San Francisco Giants pitcher Barry Zito was in a car accident in Los Angeles less than 24 hours before the defending World Series champions open their regular season at Dodger Stadium. Zito is believed to be relatively unhurt, and as the team’s fourth starter coming out of spring training is scheduled to start Sunday night’s game against the Dodgers.

Zito’s car was broadsided at a West Hollywood intersection shortly before 8 pm on Wednesday night. Zito has a home close by in the Hollywood Hills. The pitcher went to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center “just to get checked out,” and was later released. Police determined he was not at fault in the accident, according to a LA County Sheriff’s spokesman.

The other driver was reportedly also uninjured, but Zito’s car has “major damage.”

Crosby Likely Out for Playoffs

The Pittsburgh Penguins have been without their concussed captain Sidney Crosby since early January, and now the team’s general manager said his star definitely won’t be back for the final few weeks of the regular seaso and hinted Crosby will likely be unavailable for the entire playoffs. Crosby has been showing some small signs of progress, though.

Crosby will be traveling with the team for Thursday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, and will participate in the pre-game morning skate. But Crosby’s not allowed to participate in contact practices or skate with the team on non-game days.

“Our captain is coming back any time soon?” said Penguins general manager Ray Shero. “That is not our expectation. Having said that, I don’t want to take hope away from the player, because he’s feeling good about himself. But when I talk to Dan Bylsma, our coach, about a date, a certain date about when Sid might be coming back, the certain date might be in training camp.

Thiago Silva Admits to Using “Urine Adulterant”

UFC fighter Thiago Silva is confessing to using a “urine adulterant” prior to his UFC 125 fight with Brandon Vera (pictured). That fight, as you might recall, featured Silva dominating Vera and busting his nose to the point where it was gruesomely misshapen. Silva explains:

“I used a urine adulterant when giving a sample following my fight with Brandon Vera. I did so in an attempt to alter the results of the test and knowingly broke the rules of the Nevada Athletic Commission. This was a terrible decision on my part for which I will be punished. I am prepared to accept this punishment, learn from it and move on. I apologize to the Commission, the UFC, Brandon Vera and the MMA fans.
