Before the game, critics were saying Kansas State needed a key win to make their mark on the tournament committee. Frank Martin and his Kansas State Wildcats got off to a slow start and never got it together; losing 90-66 in Lawrence on Saturday night.
Fresh off their 69 game home winning streak being snapped by the Texas Longhorns, the Jayhawks took a 37-20 lead into the locker room at halftime. Kansas held their opponents to 38% shooting from the field, as the Jayhawks shot a blistering 61%.
Markieff Marcus scored 20 points for Bill Self’s squad. Also leading Kansas in the key win was Tyshawn Taylor, and his 13 points. The win for Kansas was their 181st in the 104 year history of the two teams getting together on the basketball court.
Alexander Ovechin won his third straight break-away challenge on Saturday night at the National Hockey League All Star Game skills contest. Ovechin and Zdeno Chara made Eric Staal look like a general manager extraordinaire with his pick of both players.
Chara broke his two year record for the hardest shot recorded with a shot of 105.9 mph. His shot beat Shea Weber of Nashville, who recorded a shot of 104.8 on the radar. Chara’s bullet shot brought people to their feet in the Carolina arena.
Also on the night, the fastest skater competition went to Michael Grabner of the New York Islanders. Best accuracy award went to Vancouver’s Daniel Sedin and the shoot-out award went to Anaheim’s Corey Perry.
The All Star Game is set to get underway Sunday night. After that, teams will get back together on Monday and action on the ice will continue on Tuesday.
The Baltimore Ravens fired quarterback coach Jim Zorn on Thursday, and in the process made their franchise quarterback Joe Flacco upset. Flacco was quoted as being “not happy” and it took it as a personal attack on him.
Flacco completed 62.6% of his passes this season. In his career he is completing 60%. Flacco threw for 3622 yards and 25 touchdowns, with 10 interceptions for Baltimore. The Ravens finished the regular season with a 12-4 record. The Ravens were downed in the postseason by Pittsburgh after beating Kansas City.
When the Ravens fired Zorn, head coach John Harbaugh claimed he wanted to expand the role of offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.
