FedExCup vs. Race to Dubai

The European Tour’s Race to Dubai ended this past weekend, about two months after the PGA Tour’s FedExCup playoffs concluded. The Race to Dubai rewards the Top 15 players in its standings, so we’ll compare those players to the Top 15 in the final FedExCup standings. Three golfers made both Top 15s: England’s Luke Donlad (#15 in the Race to Dubai, #3 in FedExCup), South Africa’s Ernie Els (#7 in the Race,  #9 in FedExCup) and England’s Paul Casey (#12 in the Race, #6 in FedExCup).

Here’s how the rest of the best matchup:

Winners: Martin Kaymer, Germany, (#3 in the World Rankings) Race to Dubai winner vs. Jim Furyk, USA, (#6) FedExCup winner.

Kaymer was gifted a major by Dustin Johnson’s blunder, but Furyk won three tournaments, including The Tour Championship where he sunk a putt for $11 million. Kaymer was 2-1-1 in the 2010 Ryder Cup, while Furyk was 0-2-1. EDGE: USA. USA leads 1-0.

Hiller, Ducks Blank Kings

Swiss goaltender Jonas Hiller got his first shutout of the season and 7th of his NHL career on Monday night as the Anaheim Ducks beat the Los Angeles Kings 2-0. Ducks rookie defenseman Cam Fowler, the 12th overall pick in the 2010 NHL draft who will turn 19 next week, opened the scoring with a second-period power play goal. Jason Blake then made it 2-0 with 2:24 left in the game.

Hiller stopped 27 shots to get the shutout. He’s been solid this season with a 7-4-1 record and 2.69 goals against average and .912 saves percentage. Hiller got plenty of help from his teammates, who sacrificed their bodies to block shots all night. “That’s the type of game our club has to play night in and out,” said Ducks Coach Randy Carlyle. “We won a big game and got great efforts from the whole group. The true display was at the end of the game, when people were sacrificing bodies to block shots and protect the shutout for Jonas Hiller.

Tulowitzki Gets Jeter-Sized Deal

An overrated shortstop who wears No. 2 on his jersey got a lengthy contract extension on Monday that averages just over $19 million per year, but it wasn’t Derek Jeter. The Colorado Rockies gave a boatload of money to shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who like Jeter won a Gold Glove in 2010. At 26, Tulowitzki is 10 years younger than Jeter, but is now under contract with the Rockies for the next 10 seasons.

The timing of the Tulowitzki deal has raised more than a few eyebrows, because Tulowitzki was already under contract to the Rockies through 2013 with an option for 2014. Now he gets a seven-year, $134 million extension that will keep him a Rockie through 2020. While Tulowitzki placed 5th in the NL MVP voting the past two seasons, he’s also played in 122 games or less in two of the past three seasons.

49ers Rout Cardinals But Lose Gore For Season; Anderson Freaks

There was good news and bad news for the San Francisco 49ers. Good news: the 49ers beat the Cardinals 27-6 on Monday Night Football. Bad news: the 49ers are still just 4-7. Good news: the 49ers are just one game out of first in the NFC West, with games left against all three division rivals. Bad news: 49ers star running back Frank Gore got hurt and is out for the year. OK news: Brian Westbrook filled in well for Gore.

For the Cardinals, the brightest highlight/lowlight was an angry, profanity-laced tirade at the postgame press conference from quarterback Derek Anderson. ESPN’s broadcast caught Anderson apparently laughing on the sidelines while down 18 points in the fourth quarter, and Anderson did not appreciate getting asked about it at all:

Anderson’s responses:
