After seven weeks of NFL action, only three teams share the NFL’s best record at 5-1: the New England Patriots, New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers. All three 5-1 teams are in action this Sunday against some of the best teams in the NFC. At least one of the one-loss teams is likely to suffers its second loss of the season on Sunday. Here’s our picks for all three games.
Packers (4-3) at Jets (-245) Sunday 1 PM EDT The Jets have won five straight and have clearly been the more consistent ball club. The Packers made plenty of mistakes in their first loss to the Bears, and didn’t play much better in back-to-back overtime losses to the Redskins and Dolphins. Will last week’s win over Brett Favre and the Vikings be enough to get Green Bay over the hump and playing consistent. For this week anyway, I think so — mixed with a bit of complacency finally setting in for the Jets.
German Martin Kaymer seems to be wilting under the pressure of his first chance to claim golf’s number one world ranking, which Tiger Woods has held for over five years. Kaymer, who has won his last three 72-hole tournaments, needs at least a second-place finish at the Andalucia Masters to accomplish that goal, but halfway through the tournament, he’s 11 shots behind leader Graeme McDowell.
Northern Ireland’s McDowell (currently No. 13 in the world) was playing with Kaymer (currently No. 4) for the first two rounds, just eleven days after the 2010 Ryder Cup teammates and major winners finished tied for last at the 36-hole Grand Slam of Golf event in Bermuda. McDowell put up scores of 68 and 67 in his first two days at the Spanish tournament, while Kaymer struggled to 72/74, making bogeys on three of his last five holes in the second round to land in a tie for 38th.
Looking only at the final score of Game 2 of the 2010 World Series — Giants 9, Rangers 0 — one might easily miss the stellar pitching performance of Giants starter Matt Cain. But the Giants offense, a day after putting up 11 runs on Texas, only had a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the eight, then exploded for seven insurance runs to ensure they went to Texas up two games to none. Still, in this so-called year of the pitcher and postseason of the pitcher, no pitcher has shone brighter than Matt Cain.
Phillies ace Roy Halladay, after his overrated NLDS no-hitter, was 1-1 and gave up six earned runs in two NLCS starts against the Giants. Rangers ace Cliff Lee increased his postseason career record to 7-0 in eight starts with three terrific performances in the ALDS and ALCS, but then gave up six earned runs in less than five innings to take the loss in World Series Game 1. Even Giants ace Tim Lincecum is just 3-1 with a 2.79 ERA in four postseason starts and a brief relief appearance.
Tennessee Titans (5-2) @ San Diego Chargers (2-5)
Time: 4:05 pm EST
Point Spread: San Diego Chargers -3.5
Over/Under Line: 44.5
Preview: In a game featuring two teams heading in the opposite direction, the Tennessee Titans will take on the San Diego Chargers. Tennessee is 5-2 and have won their last three games. The Titans two losses this season came at home to Pittsburgh and at home to Denver.
The Titans rank 8th in the NFL with 131 rushing yards per game. Chris Johnson leads the team with 662 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns on the season. Kenny Britt leads the receiving core for Tennessee with 7 touchdown receptions. San Diego is in a must win situation in week 8. The Chargers have won just two of their first seven games on the season. San Diego is 2.5 games behind divisional leading Kansas City.
