It has been an interesting postseason in the NBA so far as there have been plenty of surprises throughout the playoffs with teams getting knocked out much earlier than anticipated and other teams defying the odds.
Before the NBA playoffs began, everyone was riding the Cleveland Cavaliers bandwagon as it was a forgone conclusion that the two-time NBA MVP LeBron James would lead the Cavs into the NBA Finals and bring home an NBA title. Despite almost everyone being in agreement about the Cavs possibly winning an NBA title this season, that just wasn’t the case as Cleveland underestimated the competition for the second straight season and failed to live up the hype once again.
Needless to say, the Cleveland Cavaliers could be on the verge of serious retooling this summer as they have already fired head coach Mike Brown and look like they will lose LeBron James to free agency come July 1st.
Angels slugger Kendry Morales was unable to walk off the field Saturday after breaking his leg celebrating the walk-off grand slam he hit. While Morales joins the pantheon of athletes hurt while celebrating and may be out for the year, the Angels are left with a big void in their lineup. CSN New England wants them to take Mike Lowell off Boston’s hands, noting that he’d be a cheaper option than Lance Berkman or Paul Konerko. (Lowell also managed to win the 2007 World Series MVP without injuring himself.)
So far reps of the Angels and Red Sox have said there’s been no trade talks between the clubs. An anonymous AL executive said the Angels will most likely try to fill the Morales hole from within their organization since that’s their usual MO. After Sunday’s game, the Angels were on a two-game winning streak, two games below .500, and only 2.5 back of Oakland for the AL West lead.
Zach Johnson shot a 64 on Sunday at Colonial to win with a tournament-record 21 under par. What does the man get for his fifth tour victory since winning The Masters in ’07? Well, $1,116,000 in prize money and the traditional plaid jacket. In what may seem like a cheap imitation of that other tournament in Augusta, the Fort Worth tournament has been awarding a jacket with traditional Scottish tartan since 1952.
The other big news at Colonial was Phil Mickelson missing the cut after a lot of pre-tournament hoopla about his wife’s breast cancer and his chances of taking the top ranking from Tiger Woods. Mickelson won the plaid jacket in Texas in 2008, then chose not to come back to defend in ’09 after his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. Golf fans wore pink on Saturday in 2009 and again in 2010 to show their support, but Lefty apparently had better things to do with his Memorial Day weekend.
Former USC star running back LenDale White was traded during this year’s draft to the Seattle Seahawks, reuniting him with former USC coach Pete Carroll for the coach’s first season in Seattle. Or so it seemed, as a month later, the Seahawks cut White amid reports of a 4-game PED suspension. An NFL spokesman refused to confirm the suspension because of confidentiality issues.
Coach Carroll has also publicly feuded with one of his former quarterbacks, Mark Sanchez of the Jets. Four days before White was dumped, Carroll told reporters that the running back had “a long ways to go to get back in here with this club, but we’re going to certainly wait it out and see how it does.”
White was “surprised” and “not doing good,” according to his uncle.
The Seahawks still have a lot of USC players on their roster:
