Throughout the history of the NBA there has been some infamously bad teams which seem to just get worse as time rolls on season after season, but few teams have been able to compete with the likes of the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers who were only able to win a total of nine games throughout an entire 82 NBA regular season.
Nine wins in 82 games is just pitiful to say the least, but the closest that any team has ever come to this NBA record which no NBA franchise wants to challenge is the 1992-93 Dallas Mavericks who were only able to win a total of 11 games in that season. That is pretty damn close, but this season the lowly New Jersey Nets have gotten even closer as they came into their game against the San Antonio Spurs on Monday night with only nine wins of their own with only nine games left in the NBA regular season.
Throughout the 100 plus years of organized professional sports there have been scores of nicknames given to athletes. Monikers like “Magic,” “The Great One” and “Charlie Hustle” are as synonymous with success as the the men who made them famous.
When pondering all the handles associated with the world of sports, it’s easy to note that some are better than others. The “Stilt” was perfect for Wilt Chamberlain, but it also conjures images of a circus. The “Big Unit” carries with it lots of connotations besides Randy Johnson’s tallness, if you know what I mean.
The UFC will hold their 21st Fight Night event from Bojangles Arena in Charlotte, NC on Wednesday night. The event will be televised live on Spike TV in the US. In the main event, Kenny Florian will face former PRIDE superstar Takanori Gomi in his UFC debut. Also on the card, a heavyweight battle between Roy ‘Big Country’ Nelson–I’m sure the fact he’s booked in an event held in an arena named for a chain of fried chicken restaurants isn’t a coincidence–will face 6’11″ Stefan Struve. No real interest in the undercard but we will take some wagering positions on the top two fights. The lines below are from Bookmaker.
UFC FIGHT NIGHT 21:
KENNY FLORIAN VS. TAKANORI GOMI:
Milton Bradley was out of the Seattle Mariners’ lineup Sunday when they faced his former Chicago Cubs team in a spring training game. Did the outfielder really need a day off, or was Don Makamatsu just playing it safe?
Chances are, he was hoping to avoid any lunatic uproars, plunkings, trash-talking or general panic… which is really too bad. Just think of all the wonderful things that could’ve happened! Not to fear though, I’m sure we’ll get to see many awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping moments via Bradley this season since Wakamatsu has designated him as the team’s everyday clean-up hitter for 2010.
Speaking of the Mariners and temper tantrums, Cliff Lee’s appeal hearing was postponed Monday morning because one of the officials was unable to participate in the scheduled teleconference.
