Lance Berkman’s nickname, when he is hurt, is Fat Elvis. When he is hitting bombs, you can go ahead and refer to him as Big Puma.
The Houston Astros All-Star first baseman has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left knee injury that just won’t seem to go away. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on March 13 the knee got all mangled and swollen within the first few days of Spring Training.
Initially, the club said Berkman would miss only two to four weeks, but now it looks like The King will be out for a couple more. They lied to you, Houston fans.
If West Virginia is going to get past Duke to advance to the NCAA Championship game, they will apparently be doing so without the services of starting point guard, Darryl “Truck” Bryant. Bryant is nursing a broken right foot, something he did during a practice session before the Mountaineers’ Sweet 16 game against Washington.
While it doesn’t look like Bryant will be playing Saturday, never say never. Before the Kentucky game, Bryant was fitted with a special shoe, and declared himself ready to play; although, his self-diagnosis fell on deaf ears when Bob Huggins went with Joe Mazzulla, who had a career game against the Wildcats, while powering his team to the Final Four.
By all accounts, supposed number one overall pick Sam Bradford did nothing to hurt his stock during his private workout on Monday. Any concerns about his surgically repaired throwing shoulder were laid to rest after he displayed excellent touch and velocity.
In fact, Bradford looked so good there is speculation building that teams in desperate need of a franchise quarterback might be willing to swing a deal with the Rams, who currently hold the top spot in April’s draft. The boys at Pro Football Weekly surmise the most interested party could be the Washington Redskins.
The defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers are gearing up for another run at an NBA title as the best team in the Western Conference will almost certainly head into the playoffs with the conference’s best record for the second straight season.
Just like the two previous seasons though, in which Kobe Bryant and company made it all the way to the NBA Finals, the Lakers will most likely head into the playoffs without their starting center Andrew Bynum due to injury once again.
It is starting to sound like the same old story in Los Angeles as the Lakers youngest player has once again gone down with injury and will not be able to help the team until his sprained Achilles is healed and ready to go. Fortunately for the defending champs, they have Lamar Odom who can step in and take over Pau Gasol’s spot while the Spaniard moves to the center position.
