Back in week 10 we were all witnesses to perhaps the game of the year in the NFL when the Indianapolis Colts came from behind in the fourth quarter to beat the New England Patriots35-34. Not only was this the most anticipated game of the season as it usually is, but the game was as advertised as the Patriots and the Colts battled it out in another classic performance by these two AFC heavyweights.
The week 10 between the Colts and Patriots will be hard to live up to, but this week’s Monday night football matchup just might do it as the New England Patriots take on yet another undefeated opponent in the 10-0 New Orleans Saints.
After another disappointing season was capped by a four-game losing streak, Notre Dame has fired head coach Charlie Wies.
Weis, who had six seasons remaining on his 10-year contract, was let go after athletic director Jack Swarbrick recommended the move to the university’s president Sunday night. Assistant head coach Rob Ianello will step in for Weis until a new head coach is hired.
Weis is walking away with a .565 winning percentage (35-27) which is crappier than even the two coaches before him, Tyrone Willingham and Bob Davie who put up a .583. Overall, his teams had six losses by 26 points or more.
The first two seasons under Weis were promising, however. He came to the school straight from the New England Patriots’ offensive coordinator position, brimming with confidence and excitement. Weis produced more victories (19) than any other Notre Dame coach, with both seasons ending in BCS bowl losses. Then they lost Brady Quinn. And Jeff Samardzija. All of sudden they were 0-5 for the first time in school history. They finished 3-9 in 2007, leaving Weis one loss shy of matching Davie’s school record of 16 losses in his first three seasons.
Serena Williams was fined a record $82,500 on Monday for her U.S. Open outburst, and could be facing a suspension from the tournament if she flips out at any Grand Slam in the next two years.
So what did she do? The 11-time Grand Slam singles champ went nuts on a lineswoman after a foot-fault call (a call rarely made at the end of such an important match) during her semi-final loss to Kim Clijsters at the U.S. Open in September. The call resulted in a double-fault for Williams, moving Clijsters one point from victory. Serena stopped, grabbed a ball to serve again and then paused. She moved toward the official and started hollering, cussing and shaking the ball at her. She was penalized a point on the spot – during match point – to end the semifinal with Clijsters ahead 6-4, 7-5.
In light of Tiger Woods’ Thanksgiving weekend romp over a fire hydrant– a situation in which no one but he and his wife will ever know what really happened — I’ve compiled a list of athletes making complete and utter asses of themselves over the last decade, which should fit in nicely with our Memorable Moments series. Whether the country’s #1 golfer was having an affair, arguing with his wife, drunk, or sleep-walking, his middle-of-the-night fiasco doesn’t come close to some of the crap these yahoos got busted doing.
We’re gonna go ahead and stick to the last decade and completely rule out dog-fighting and murderous rampages, just to keep it a little more current and a little less heinous.
11. In November of 2008, Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself at a Manhattan nightclub, where he was arrested for carrying an unlicensed firearm. He is now serving a two-year prison sentence since the bullet narrowly missed a security guard. What a moron.
