Cubs Take GM Theo Epstein From Red Sox

The Chicago Cubs haven’t won the World Series in over 100 years, so who better to hire as general manager than Theo Epstein, the wonderkid who helped bring the Boston Red Sox their first title in 85 years? We’ll find out as the Cubs and Epstein have reportedly agreed to a five-year, $15 million deal for him to take the reigns in Wrigleyville.

The Cubs will reportedly pay the $3.5 million buyout to get Epstein out of the final year of his contract with the Red Sox, but after the Red Sox just finished the biggest September collapse in baseball history, there wasn’t much of a push from Boston to get Epstein to stay. According to the Chicago Tribune, Red Sox owner John Henry “did little to convince Epstein they wanted to keep him past the final year of his deal in 2012.”

The current knock on Epstein is that while he did a great job developing home grown talent for the Red Sox, he missed often with free agents that got huge contracts. A lot of that may be having to compete in the same division with the Yankees, and no one in the National League Central or even the National League will have Yankees-sized budgets.

The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham reports that “Epstein’s top assistant, Ben Cherington, has been operating as the de facto general manager for several weeks and is expected to swiftly be named as his replacement.”
