The Chicago Blackhawks rallied to force overtime on Brent Seabrook’s goal with less than 15 seconds left in regulation, but the Phoenix Coyotes prevailed on Martin Hanzal’s goal in overtime. The 3-2 home win gives the Phoenix Coyotes a 1-0 lead over the favored Blackhawks in their first round best-of-seven series. Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith kept his team in it with 43 saves in Game One.

“We just said that somebody’s got to be the hero, and when you’re in that moment and you score a goal, it was just a great feeling in overtime,” said Hanzal after his overtime game-winner. “It feels amazing.”

The Blackhawks stressed their need to improve after the loss. “We came close and they scored [the game-winner] on a point-shot deflection,” said Chicago forward Patrick Sharp. “It’s the first game. There’s things that need to be better.”

The Blackhawks took an early 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game on a goal from their captain Jonathan Toews, returning to action after missing the last 22 games of the regular season with a concussion, but Phoenix goalie Smith and his teammates didn’t get down on themselves. “I knew it probably wasn’t going to be a 1-0 game,” said Smith. “We showed resilience all year, and we did it again tonight.”

Three of Thursday’s four playoff games went to overtime, and four of the first seven postseason games have needed extra time.
