Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett made some very odd decisions in the final 26 seconds of regulation, leading to a missed potential game-winning field goal and an overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals. The Cowboys got the ball down to the Cardinals 31 with 31 seconds left in regulation and two time outs left, but Garrett figured that was close enough.

Then, Garrett called time out just before the ball was snapped and his kicker Dan Bailey made a 48-yard field goal that didn’t count. Bailey couldn’t make it again when it actually counted, and in overtime Kevin Kolb hooked up with LaRod Stephens-Howling for a 52-yard catch and run for the winning touchdown. Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt wasn’t above clowning on Garrett’s ineptitude after the game. “I was glad they iced their kicker at the end so I didn’t have to do it,” said Whisenhunt.

It sounds like Garrett may have been worried about his quarterback Tony Romo throwing an interception in the final seconds if given a chance. “You see so many situations where you have negative plays in those situations,” Garrett tried to explain. “We felt like we were in his range to kick the game-winner.”

On the other side, Stephens-Howling is from Texas and was happy to beat his friends’ favorite team. “All my friends probably had Dallas jerseys on,” said the third-year pro. “They’re die-hard, so I’ll be happy to slap them in the face whenever I see them.”
