By all accounts, supposed number one overall pick Sam Bradford did nothing to hurt his stock during his private workout on Monday. Any concerns about his surgically repaired throwing shoulder were laid to rest after he displayed excellent touch and velocity.
In fact, Bradford looked so good there is speculation building that teams in desperate need of a franchise quarterback might be willing to swing a deal with the Rams, who currently hold the top spot in April’s draft. The boys at Pro Football Weekly surmise the most interested party could be the Washington Redskins.
It’s an interesting theory, and with the ‘Skins being unusually quiet this offseason, it makes sense that Daniel Snyder and new head honcho Mike Shanahan are concocting a big splash for draft weekend. Snyder loves being the center of attention and Shanahan loves young signal callers.
Any move to land Bradford would be costly. The Redskins, or any team for that matter, would have to part with a hefty combination of picks and players. I’m talking a pair of first-rounders, minimum.
I doubt any package is enough to convince the Rams to pull the trigger. They have nothing at quarterback right now and Bradford would at the very least give them a player to build around for the next few seasons. Number one overall selections don’t come along too often, so it’s best to play it smart and take the guy you want rather than hand him over to someone else, even if the pot is sweetened.
There’s still a chance the Rams could engineer a trade, but after Bradford’s showing on Monday, those chances are dwindling. Unless the ‘Skins or a team like Cleveland were to make a colossal offer, it’s a safe bet Bradford will be a Ram on April 22.
