We’ve got some college basketball betting action today as the University of Colorado heads out on the road to take on #1 Kansas. Given that the Buffaloes are 12-13 on the year while the Jayhawks are 25-1 there’s a good chance they’ll lose. But obviously as a sports betting enthusiast you know that’s not the game we’re concerned about. The battle against the pointspread is much more interesting and very evenly matched. Colorado is 10-10 against the spread this season, while Kansas is 10-12 against the number.
COLORADO VS. KANSAS
As you can tell from the numbers above, neither team is a particularly impressive performer against the pointspread. Of course that concerns us less when we’re *getting* 20+ points than when we’re *laying* 20+ points. Where Colorado has performed well against the spread has been in Big 12 Conference play where they’re 7-4 ATS despite a 3-8 SU mark. It’s likely a case where Colorado has put up a good effort for conference games while opponents have a hard time getting up for a team near the bottom of the Big 12 standings.
So the question becomes not ‘will the Jayhawks win’ but ‘what are the chances they’ll win and drop a 20+ point margin on Colorado?’. Kansas has a string of much more difficult games on deck against Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas State and Iowa to close out the Big12 slate presenting the possibility to a ‘lookahead’ situation here. They Jayhawks are just 4-6 ATS in conference this year and have covered only 3 of their L10 games against teams with losing records. And while the Jayhawks are definitely capable of dropping a huge margin on Colorado here, the track record of the series suggests they won’t. Kansas has won the L5 meetings, but Colorado has covered the pointspread in all 5. That strongly suggests that Jayhawks coach Bill Self–who has been on the sidelines during that run–doesn’t go for the jugular against an overmatched conference foe. Jayhawks will almost certainly win, but Colorado should stay within the big number.
