After another disappointing season was capped by a four-game losing streak, Notre Dame has fired head coach Charlie Wies.
Weis, who had six seasons remaining on his 10-year contract, was let go after athletic director Jack Swarbrick recommended the move to the university’s president Sunday night. Assistant head coach Rob Ianello will step in for Weis until a new head coach is hired.
Weis is walking away with a .565 winning percentage (35-27) which is crappier than even the two coaches before him, Tyrone Willingham and Bob Davie who put up a .583. Overall, his teams had six losses by 26 points or more.
The first two seasons under Weis were promising, however. He came to the school straight from the New England Patriots’ offensive coordinator position, brimming with confidence and excitement. Weis produced more victories (19) than any other Notre Dame coach, with both seasons ending in BCS bowl losses. Then they lost Brady Quinn. And Jeff Samardzija. All of sudden they were 0-5 for the first time in school history. They finished 3-9 in 2007, leaving Weis one loss shy of matching Davie’s school record of 16 losses in his first three seasons.
The last two seasons both began with high hopes, just to get crushed in November. After a 5-2 start that ended in a 1-4 skid a year ago, this year’s 6-2 beginning led to their second loss in three years to Navy and a four-game losing streak. Among the likely candidates for Weis’ job are Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly, TCU coach Gary Patterson and Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh.
So what’s next for Charlie? Back to the NFL or an appearance on NBC’s Biggest Loser?
